Etsy Shopping: Moon & Crystals

I admit I have what one might call an addiction: Etsy. I love the idea that in this day and age of mass produced everything, technology can offer up a marketplace for handcrafted items. I have pages upon pages of favorites and treasury lists from Etsy. When I need a break from my life, I can hop onto the computer and engage in some window-shopping therapy. I can’t buy every piece that I want, but I can enjoy the knowledge that beauty is being made and is out there for those who can find it.

Having grown up in an isolated community where one’s shopping choices were limited to two grocery stores, a Ben Franklin and a Pamida, seeing the choices afforded by the internet these days is like being presented with a cornucopia of beauty. More than that, though, I feel good about buying from artists on Etsy. Technically, buying from my local Walmart is supporting my local businesses, but it doesn’t feel that way. Whereas, with Etsy, the artist I buy from might be on the other side of the world, but I feel like my money is being better spent.

I have friends who sell on Etsy and while they are not swimming Scrooge McDuck like through piles of cash, the site allows them to practice their craft and earn a little pin money. And when misfortune visits them, such as car trouble or unexpected vet bills, having this venue open to them can give a sense of control in an uncontrollable situation. They don’t have to sit on their hands, hoping that things will work out. They can put those hands to good use, creating something wonderful and then connecting to buyers via Etsy. Whether or not they can cover the shortfall depends on many factors, but at least they have the option.

To that end, and with January’s dual themes in mind, I decided to share some of the items on my “I Have a Mighty Need” list. If you have particular items related to crystals or moon, share them in the comments.

New Book, New Year

I released my second book, Storyteller Runes, last week, two years after releasing my first, Your Mythic Spirit Guide. I hadn’t planned on taking so long before getting my second out. Life, as they say, is what happens when you are making other plans. But I did finish my book of writing and runes and want to commit to spending more time on creative pursuits. To that end, I’ve started this blog.

To keep myself motivated, I even have gone so far as to give myself some themes for the next few months. Since this is a new year, I decided to focus on the moon and crystals in January.

Crystals because I have an affinity for them. They’re beautiful, they harmonize a space with little effort on my part, and they are kid and pet friendly (a must for this household). Crystals and plants are the easiest ways to improve the energy of a space.

And the moon because it is affiliated with crystals. My favorite way to charge and cleanse crystals is to lay them out in the light of a full moon. I’ve already taken advantage of the first full moon of January (the 15th) to cleanse and charge the crystals on my altar. I like the gentleness of moonlight, it’s comforting to me. Also, I’m a night owl and it’s easier for me to set out my crystals then, rather than trying to use sunlight. Days around this house can be a bit hectic, especially in the mornings.

So, for my first post of the year here is a list of the full moons for 2014. To charge your crystals, place them in a container (I like to use the bed of rice suggestion here) out where moonlight will fall on them. Choose a place where they won’t be disturbed by curious pets or children. The light of the full moon is best for general cleansing and charging. If you are trying to remove any negativity from a crystal set it out in the light of a waning moon.
